Criterion D Design

The creating part of this project is to make a mixed media self portrait. In art class we are making the piece of art. First we project the picture out to a wall and trace it on a big sheet of paper. Then we start putting color into it. We can use anything to decorate it. We had to bring our materials in from home and use something from home but there are also things in the art room. There are a lot of things in the art room. The way we use our materials have to mean something to us. It can show our interests or express ourselves etc. For example if I like to read, I can stick ripped up books on the paper as my face. This is my favorite part of the project. It is my favorite part of the project because I like to create. I like to get my hands dirty. I like looking at the outcome of my art. Even if it is not that good, I like the feeling of creating something. To make my portrait I used many different materials. I tried to show a wide variety of me by using many different materials. Yesterday, I finished doing the art. It took me a long time but I got it done and I am proud of it. I used a few different colors of paint, chalk, magazine pieces, feathers, lip gloss, facial cream, little soft pom poms, cloth, pieces of stars, and a piece of jewelry. All of these materials each have a meaning.
-Paint is used for most pieces of art, and I love art. If there was no art in the world, it would be very different from how it is today. I painted the sky, mountains, heart and bars. The blue skie symbolizes the clear blue skies of Mongolia. Mongolia has a beautiful sky and I love it. The green mountain also represents Mongolia.
-Chalk represents my childhood. When I was a little girl, I used to play outside all the time, every chance I got, I would play outside. I played many different kinds of games but the one I liked best is hopscotch, and you draw a hopscotch game with a chalk on the ground. That is why I used the chalk for the cement behind me.
-For the magazine pieces, there is a lot of meanings. For the border, I cut out pieces of eyes and lips. I love looking at people’s faces, and it also stands for seeing and talking. People love to talk about other people like what they saw and what they heard. And it sometimes is a good thing and sometimes is a bad thing, so to let other people not talk bad things about me, I have to behave. Another thing for the eyes and mouths, all of the pieces I cut out from are people that inspire me. They are mostly actresses and models. I like acting, and models and actresses both act.
-For my face, neck and chest, I used magazine pieces too. I cut out very little pieces of skin mostly form advertisements and stick it on. That symbolizes that I want to have skin like those people in the magazines. They are soft, smooth, clear skins. I cut out pieces of magazines
-The feather represents birds. Birds can fly, and I want to fly. I have always wished that I could fly, that I could see the world from above. I look at something and wonder what it looks like from above. That is why I like going in airplanes. And I also want to feel the wind in my face like in those movies. Another reason why I want to fly is to get to places quicker. Sometimes going in car seems to take ages. But at least we don’t have to walk nowadays. I got the feathers from the art room and used it as a decoration for my collar for my shirt.
-I love make-up. My hobby is to decorate myself. So I used lip-gloss and facial make-up. I applied the lip gloss to my lips and the make-up to my arms. Even though I don’t apply make-up to my arms, I just used it.
-Pom poms are nice and soft and round. I like those kinds of things. For some reason, I feel that puppies are like those pom poms, and I love puppies. I also got it from the art room and also I used it for the collar of my shirt.
-Like I said, my hobby is to decorate myself. Clothing and jewelry is a big part of decorating myself, so I used cloth for my clothes. If clothing wasn’t important I would have just painted my clothes on my portrait. I love to go shopping and buy clothes. I used a broken piece of my jewelry.
-Stars make the night sky look very pretty. I like to look at the stars at night and wonder. Wonder what is out there in the universe. I believe that there are aliens out there and wonder when they will come to our planet. I got the stars from the art room and stuck it on the cement part because there was no other space to stick it.
My art work is very colorful so it is different from many other students’ work. I unconsciously made it colorful, and I realized the colorfulness represents something. I like all the colors in the world. The colors are what makes the world beautiful so I don’t have a favorite color.
I don’t think I made much mistakes. Once, I spilled a lot of liquid glue right on my art work. I spill half of the big bottle and it took me a long time to clean it all up. I was so angry at myself, so I learned that I should not leave an open glue right beside the art work. Another mistake I made was that I colored the arms with markers. After I finished coloring it, I looked at it and it looked very bad. So I glued white paper over it and colored it with make-up. My friend gave me the idea of coloring it with make-up.
If I would do this project again, I would think about how I am exactly going to do it. Even though I think my art work turned out good, I would plan everything very good. I worked on the art work 2 times a week for 2 periods each for 3 weeks. I used my time wisely. People did not really tell me anything about the art work. Not many people saw it.
The hardest part of making this mixed media portrait was making the skin. I did not know how to make the right colors. I first though of making all of the skin with cut out pieces but it took very long so I decided to use something else for the arms. Making the face and neck with very small pieces of magazines was very hard. Finding the right skin color was very hard too. The easiest part was to paint.
I think the strength of my piece is the way I express myself. I did not put or use anything that does not represent me. I think the weakest part of my piece is my face. People said I look like I put on a lot of make-up. I don’t want to look like I put on a lot of make-up and that might throw some of the meaning off.
Technology helped me a lot to make a better art work. Editing the picture first gave many ideas and really gave a head start to make the art piece. If I did not have an edited picture I would have not known what to do.
I learn a lot from doing this project. I learned more about me and about how to make a mixed media art. I did not know was mixed media was before I did this project. I also realized about the things I liked and felt.

Criterion B Design

This is my chosen picture for the project. I think this picture expresses me in a perfect way. It is the same photo of the one I edited before this. I removed all the unnecessary colors and filled the whole heart with red. You can see some of the background so that is important because you can see the mountains and little bushes. They represent my country. The heart represents that I know I am loved by my family.

I used picnik.com to edit this picture.

This picture is my chosen picture so it meets all of my design specifications.

This is the first photo I edited. It looks very messy. It has different colors here and there and the background I wanted to show is not visible. I edited this photo like this because the red effect just looked nice. And then I filled some of the heart with read and left some of it blue from the blue sky.

I used picnik.com to edit this picture.

This picture meets 6 out of 8 of my design specifications.

In this picture I am standin in front a the blue wall outside of the school. I cropped it to make it closer to my face. I don’t know exactly how I made it sepia but I did when I was messing around with

the effects options. And also added a oil paint effect. This picture expresses me in off way but I will say it. I wish the world was plain sepia sometime so that everything would be less complicated. The oil paint effect is because I wish that I could draw good too.

I used the school computer’s photo editing software called PhotoStudio 5.5 to edit this picture. I think it was easier to use this program than picnik.com.

This picture meets 7 of 8 my design specifications.

This picture is my favorite altered picture. I altered it today and I wish that I had altered a long time ago and used it as my chosen picture. I took this picture the day I took all the other pictures but thought it didn’t look as good. When i altered it, I made it black and white and put a simple frame around it like I did with my chosen picture. I took this picture in the beginning beside a tree because I love nature. I want to help save the world. But the world is turning bad so it is black and white. I like that i look sad becuase I am sad that the world is getting bad.

I also used the school computer’s photo editing software called PhotoStudio 5.5.

This picture meets all of my design specifications. So i could have used it for my chosen picture but i edited it way after I did everything else so it was too late.

At first I only had 2 different types of altered photos. I only picked one picture and altered it two different ways. Today we are writing the criterion B. Mrs. Wilson told us that we needed to have 4 altered pictures so I edited 2 more pictures. On this computer I only have the pictures that we took outside of our school. I had different photos, so I edited them. I think the black and white one is very pretty. It is prettier than the one I chose for the final picture. Before, I said that I didn’t really want a black and white picture because I wanted it to be colorful. And colorful means happy, but now I don’t care. As long as it looks pretty because looking good is important to me.

In this project I am making a portraiture. I have to edit a portrait of myself in a way of describing myself. In the picture in a way I put my personality, feelings and life. This project is important for kids because it helps them understand themselves and explain themselves. Some kids have no voice and doing this project can help them get their feelings out there. The picture can be any picture taken anywhere. Ideas for where to take the picture are place that I want to be in the future, a special place or it just represents where I feel I am. When I edit it I can’t just make it look nice and not put any of me in there.

After I have edited it on the computer, the picture is projected out and I trace it on a big sheet of paper. After I have traced it I use any materials that I Iike that represents me. I When I present my portraiture to the class I want to ask them why do you think I put this here, why do you think I put that there. They can answer and if they answer the way I intended the meaning to be then I have done a good job.

My guiding questions:
Will my clients understand my edited picture?
What materials are going to represent me and my interests?
Will my edited photo be edited enough?
Who will my client be?

When we edit the picture, we can use

-flauntr.com
-photoshop.com
-splashup.com
-photfunia.com

The first thing we did was we went outside and each of us got to use the camera and we go to let our friends or Ms. Wilson take our pictures how we wanted it. I took pictures in 3 different places. First, Suugi took a picture like I was behind the gate like I’m behind bars. Second was a picture I took myself beside trees. I took that picture because I love our planet earth and wanted to make my project about being eco friendly. Third was in front of a blue wall and Ms. Wilson took that one. I was posing with my hands on my hips and smiling.

This is the picture i used to edit. I edited this picture in another way but i didnt like it that much. So i made it more plain and just colored in the heart. The other way i edtited this picture is i made everything wrong and red color.

For my picture, I used a picture that I took standing on the other side of the camera and the gate, and I made a heart shape with my arms over my head. The bars represent me feeling imprisoned sometimes but I’m not that free. It also means that i can't express myself sometimes. But the heart is that I know that I am loved and I love everyone around me. Behind me there is grass and mountains, that represents that I am in Mongolia and I love Mongolia.

When I tried to edit my picture and make it black and white or different colors and things, it felt too dark and it didn’t feel like me. So I left my picture the way it is with the natural colors of me and nature. With the blue sky and my dark skin. I think my skin color and my eyebrows are what stands out most from me so I didn’t want to change the picture so that no one can see them. The only thing I added on the computer was painting inside the heart and adding a little frame. But the frame is barely noticeable. I used picnic.com for altering my photo.

Test for the product:

A test for testing my product that i will do in art class is asking my class mates what they think i meant in the final pieace of art that i made in art class. I will see the difference between what their eyes see and what my eyes see. After everyone has speaked what they think i meant in the portraiture, i will explain what i really meant so they will understand.
